First Announcement
The Changing Land of Europe
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, May 6-8, 2001
Introduction
All European member states have now set programmes for renewable energy and are adapting to the new CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) reforms for agriculture. Many communities have rural unemployment and pollution problems and will find an emphasis on land-based renewable energy generation of great assistance as a solution for new agricultural priorities and rural re-generation.
The first European Conference on Agriculture & Renewable Energy "The Changing Land of Europe" will create an international forum that encourages a common direction in agricultural development, rural re-generation and countryside planning with a view to accelerating the implementation of suitable renewable energy sources. By addressing agricultural organisations and institutions, farmers' unions and their members, local authorities and planning regulators, alongside engineering companies, the existing barriers and opportunities can be fully exposed, and the latest trends shared.
Expert presentations and workshops will be held to accommodate the different effects of renewable energy, according to geographic locations of Europe across all of the main technologies. Supplementary activities will include excursions to established agricultural and regenerated sites in The Netherlands, a special presentation by The Netherlands Bio Energy Association, and a guided tour of SUSTAIN 2001.
Conference Aims and Objectives
As a European conference the aims and objectives refer to the agricultural and renewable energy sectors of all EU Member States.
- To create an international forum that encourages a common direction in agricultural development, rural regeneration and countryside planning with a view to accelerating the potential for renewable energy production.
- To draw together the hitherto disparate sectors of agriculture and renewable energy.
- To actively encourage and support political and industrial networking which benefits sustainable agriculture.
- To promote industry research & development in the field of "Renewable Energy Farming".
- To provide an opportunity for EU farming unions and their members to engage in the sustainable agenda making process, in order that provision be made for the "real needs" of the farmer/land owner on both the practical and the political ramifications of "changing land use".
- To assist in the achievement of practical solutions to rural energy problems, long-term sustainability needs and environment & employment issues directly connected to agriculture, and the implementation of rural regeneration.
- To support the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Renewable Energy Sources in the EU "call upon the European Institutions to address the energy problems of the EU accession countries and to come up with a clear strategy on how to help these countries to address the question of long term sustainability on energy, with its benefits in terms of environment and employment, and to link it with the necessary reform in the field of agriculture..." (Madeira Statement 2000).
