Solid Biofuels for Carbon Dioxide Mitigation

Uppsala, Sweden, 29 - 30 September 1997

A conference on the "Implementation of solid biofuels for carbon dioxide mitigation" will take place in Uppsala, Sweden, on 29 - 30 September 1997. The conference is being organized by the Department of Forest-Industry-Market Studies of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with the Belgian Biomass Association and the Joanneum Research Institute (Austria).

Biofuels are frequently referred to as a carbon dioxide neutral source of energy. A switch from fossil fuels to biofuels thus implies greatly reduced emissions of carbon dioxide. The conference will address issues relating to the economic viability of biofuels and will attempt to assess under what conditions, and to what extent, biofuels really are carbon dioxide neutral. Discussions will be based on successful examples of the use of solid biofuels.

Papers were invited under the following general topics:

The conference will last for two days including a field visit to a Salix plantation and a co-generation plant. The event falls within the "Evaluating Biofuels as a Means of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Mitigation" project, funded by the Community's ALTENER programme for the promotion of renewable energy sources. It is also supported by the International Energy Agency (IEA Bioenergy Task XV).

The conference language is English. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 1 June 1997.
