The First Five Years of the IKU - Innovation Research Centre

by Annamária Inzelt

The IKU Innovation Research Centre was established in May 1991 with the aim of promoting research and teaching of the subjects of technological change and innovation. IKU is a self-financing non-profit organisation, which belongs to the Budapest University of Economic Sciences.

For the examination of technological change the co-operation of natural scientists and engineers is indispensable. As adoption, adaptation and diffusion of innovations cannot be restricted to economics, narrowly defined, representatives of other social sciences should also be involved in research projects. IKU forms mixed groups of scientists from different backgrounds to execute IKU's research projects.

IKU has spent a great deal of its efforts to join the international research community, to become a member of research networks. IKU is member of IATAFI - the International Association for Technology Assessment and Forecasting Institutions - and has regular contacts with some leading European Institutes, e.g.: SPRU Science Police Research Unit (United Kingdom); FhG-ISI Fraunhofer-Institut für Systemtechnik und Innovationsforschung (Germany); MERIT Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (The Netherlands); CNR Consilio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy).

Researchers of IKU are members of several international associations: EEA European Economic Association, EARIE European Association for Research in Industrial Economics, EAEPE European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy, EASST European Association for the Study of Science and Technology, Schumpeter Society.
