Third Scientific Symposium "Global Change, Local Challenge"

The Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change Programme (HDP) will hold its third scientific symposium on "Global Change, Local Challenge" on September 20-22, 1995, at the International Conference Centre, Geneva.

HDP is an international research program established in 1990 by the International Social Science Council (ISSC). Its purpose is to advance research on topics that are critical for understanding both the human role in global change and the implications of global change for society.

Objectives of the Third Scientific Symposium

The Symposium will address both the scientific and programmatic issues raised by interactions between the global and local, the physical and social. It will:

_ provide an opportunity to exchange the latest research findings within the growing human dimensions community,

_ report on the progress of HDP's Research Program,

_ identify gaps in the knowledge about global change and responses to it,

_ assess progress made in defining global data sets that account for local variability,

_ identify areas where greater collaboration between social and natural scientists will enhance understanding of global change,

_ provide opportunity for a dialogue between researchers engaged in research at different scales (local, national, global) and in different regions (North, South),

_ define appropriate structures and mechanisms to improve collaboration among individuals, national programs, and international initiatives,

_ evaluate the contribution of international research efforts to decision-making at local national, and international levels.

Symposium Themes

Risk and Uncertainty in Global Change: Regional and International Implications

Regional Demographic Regimes and Impacts on Local and Global Resources

Negotiation and Implementation of International Agreements: The Role of Regions and States

HDP Research Programs and National Research Agendas
