Argonne, USA, October 17 - 20, 2000
The Fourth International Conference and biennial meeting sponsored by the International Association for Technology Assessment and Forecasting Institutions (IATAFI) and organized by Argonne National Laboratory's Environmental Assessment Division will be held at Argonne, USA, on October 17 - 20, 2000. The conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, managers, industrialists, and other professionals involved in technology assessment and forecasting in both developing and developed countries. The Conference will aid in the continuation of the IATAFI's goals:
- Link developing countries to technology assessment capabilities worldwide.
- Understand the needs of developing countries and promote cooperation among interested parties by promoting participation in international forums and projects.
- Implement an electronic network that will allow the transfer of information between the IATAFI and those who need it. The network will be based on strong regional centres and cooperating institutes.
- Expand an environment of common interest for technology assessment and forecasting institutions around the world.
Session Topics
The main theme of the Conference is: Science and Technology Assessment and Forecasting in the 21st Century: tools, methods, and case studies for evaluating sustainable development.
Papers are being solicited in the following general topical areas:
- Role of TA & TF in development and implementation of:
- Energy efficient technologies
- Environment friendly technologies
- Technologies to support sustainability - Tools and methods for TA and TF in the Information Technology Age
- Case studies of TA and TF in both developed and developing countries
- Challenges in building sustainable development capacities
- Research and development needs
- Opportunities and challenges in electronic networking.
Suggested research areas include the following:
- Information and communication technology
- Medical technology
- Biotechnology
- Transportation
- Urban infrastructure
- Digital money/smart cards
- Environmental and energy technologies.
The key date for anyone interested in submitting an abstract is June 1, 2000. Registration forms will be available soon either as a document, or by the Internet at
