Karlsruhe, Germany, September 25-28, 2002

Focus of the Conference

The Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (Fraunhofer ISI) in conjunction with the Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW), University of Karlsruhe is organising the Seventh International S&T Indicators Conference from 25 to 28 September 2002 in Karlsruhe, Germany.

As old as the tradition of using S&T indicators to measure science and technology is the discussion about their usefulness and adequacy for reflecting real processes. In addition, recent discussions have been taking place about important changes in the context of the knowledge society. But do these changes really imply a broad, radical conversion of modes of knowledge production or do they only refer to limited aspects and single observations? Is it possible to clarify and differentiate this debate by appropriate indicators? The S&T Indicators conference 2002 will be focussing on the following main themes:

Call for Papers

Authors are requested to submit an extended abstract of no more than 500 words to the Conference Secretariat, preferably by e-mail. Deadline for submission is April 30, 2002.

Most papers presented at the conference will be published in special issues of the journals Research Evaluation and Scientometrics. Authors will be invited to prepare full and final versions for publication in accordance with the editorial policies of these journals and to submit them by 31 October 2002. The final selection will be based on a peer review procedure of the written papers.

Special session on PhD projects

There will be a special session for presenting PhD projects. PhD students are invited to submit extended abstracts according to the requirement described above. These submissions must clearly refer to the "Special session on PhD projects" in the headlines. Selected PhD projects will be presented in a poster session. For each project selected a discussant will prepare comments which will be presented together with the poster. In addition, a special aural session will be held to discuss the best PhD projects presented.
