Abstract

Real world laboratories stand in several research traditions such as transdisciplinarity, transformative research and sustainability research, but offer a new potential for these. First insights from four real world labs and the accompanying research are presented in this thematic focus in combination with conceptual contributions. For a future understanding of real world lab research, seven constituing conditions have to be met, in order to use real world labs to their full potential: research orientation, normative orientation towards sustainability, transdisciplinarity, transformative approach, participation, long-term orientation and laboratory setup. Other issues are identified for further discussion.
