For some time now, technology assessment has been trying to ensure that participation and the ability to shape future processes are effectively propagated in society. Scientists are challenged to develop a contribution to possible solutions of the problem situations in their respective disciplines, as well as to communicate these comprehensibly for the public and to offer participatory processes. This is no easy task and only rarely do the complex questions of social, legal, ecological or ethical decisions have sufficient curricular space in the individual scientific disciplines. The contributions in this Special topic approach this problem from different disciplinary perspectives.
